The Best Wine Regions Near Lisbon

Four regions, four very different days. How we choose between them when guests ask.

Setúbal — the closest, the most underrated

Twenty-five minutes south of Lisbon and almost no one outside Portugal knows the name. Setúbal is Moscatel country — fortified, aromatic, the kind of wine you keep thinking about a week later. The estates here are family-run, the tastings are quiet, and the drive in is along the Sado estuary. If you have half a day, this is the answer.

Palmela — reds with character

Castelão is the grape that defines Palmela: dark, structured, a little wild. The cooperative tradition here means some of the best value bottles in Portugal come from this small region. We use Palmela as the second stop on a slower day — usually paired with a long lunch in a village that hasn't changed much in thirty years.

Arrábida — wine with a view

Arrábida isn't only a wine region — it's a natural park dropping into the Atlantic. Vineyards sit between the mountain and the sea, the light is different here, and the lunch options (Sesimbra, Portinho) are some of the best on the coast. If you want one day that combines wine, scenery, and a proper Portuguese lunch by the water, this is it.

Alentejo — the deep one

Ninety minutes east of Lisbon and the landscape changes completely: cork oaks, wheat plains, white villages, and wineries that have been making wine in clay amphorae (talhas) for two thousand years. Alentejo is a longer day — and a better one if you want to slow down properly. Évora makes the perfect base, and the wines (Antão Vaz, Aragonez, Trincadeira) reward the drive.

Which region for which traveller

Short on time and want one beautiful day — Arrábida. Wine-obsessed and prepared to drive — Alentejo. First trip to Portugal and want something genuinely local without the distance — Setúbal and Palmela together. If you can't decide, the Studio lets you mix two regions across a slow day, or stretch it into a two-day private journey south.

    Unforgettable Arrábida wine day

We were picked up at our hotel and our wonderful adventure began. Unforgettable local market, studio of a tile artisan, 3 lovely wineries, beautiful vistas, delicious Portuguese lunch, and a much broader understanding of Portugal's history. Miguel was attentive and incredibly knowledgeable. I would urge you to take this tour.

    Good food and wine

This tour took us to 3 wineries and they all were very impressive. To visit the local market was a wonderful experience too where we bought some really fresh local produce and ate fresh oysters. Lunch was also included in a local restaurant — the charcoal grilled fish and pork were delicious. João was very friendly and full of positive energy.

A fantastic time while in Lisbon

Had a fantastic time our last day in Lisbon. Our tour included a visit to a local market where we saw many species of seafood unheard in the US, a visit to three wineries where we sampled delicious regional wines and a fabulous lunch tasting the local cuisine. Bernardo was very knowledgeable. We would highly recommend this excursion.

    Lovely outing outside of Lisbon

We had a wonderful day with our guide Nuno. He was a genuinely kind, caring man and made sure we were comfortable at all times. Wine tastings were plentiful as were the presentations at the 3 wineries we attended. An excellent lunch was provided. We thank you for a great day.

    Simply the best tour!

This was the best tour on our trip! Our guide, João, was wonderful. The private tour had the right balance of vineyards to visit along with a trip to a small family owned tile facility, and a visit to the fish market. The luncheon provided was exceptional.
