Best Time of Year for a Day Trip from Lisbon
There is no bad month here. There are months that suit different days.
Spring — the one we would choose
March to June is our favourite window. The Alentejo is green and full of wildflowers before the summer burns it gold, the palace gardens in Sintra are at their best, and the coast is empty on a weekday. The sea is still cold for swimming until late May, which is the only trade-off.
Summer — bright, busy, and better early
July and August bring the warmest sea and the biggest crowds. Sintra fills by mid-morning and the roads inside the Arrábida park have seasonal access limits when the beaches are full. Everything still works — it simply needs an earlier start and a willingness to eat lunch at one rather than three.
Autumn — harvest, and the light
September and October are the quiet favourite. Harvest is happening in the cellars, the sea holds its summer warmth into October, and the crowds thin noticeably after the first week of September. If you care about wine, this is the month to come.
Winter — empty, clear, and underrated
November to February is cold, often bright, and almost entirely local. You trade swimming for empty streets, dramatic Atlantic weather and restaurant tables without booking. Tastings continue year-round. Sintra in winter mist is genuinely beautiful.
