Painting Your Own Azulejo Near Lisbon
Portugal's blue tiles are on almost every wall in Lisbon. This is the day you stop photographing them and make one yourself.
The azulejo is the most Portuguese souvenir there is.
Tiles have covered Portuguese façades, churches and kitchens for five centuries. Most visitors buy one. Very few paint one. South of Lisbon, in the Azeitão and Sesimbra area, small ateliers still work the traditional way, and that is where our craft day happens.
What the workshop actually involves.
You meet the tile-maker, mix the cobalt blue, and paint a single azulejo by hand. There is no artistic requirement — the master guides the line work. Tiles are fired after you leave, so we ship yours to your home address on request, which is the practical answer for travellers flying back to the United States with a full suitcase.
Then the day turns to wine.
The same region makes Moscatel de Setúbal. Depending on the day and availability we visit one estate — a vineyard walk and a guided tasting at Quinta de Catralvos, the founding Moscatel house of José Maria da Fonseca, or Bacalhôa, where a modern cellar sits beside a striking art collection. One winery, properly, rather than three in a rush.
Sesimbra closes it by the sea.
Sesimbra is a fishing town on the Atlantic: a harbour, easy seafood plates and a ninth-century clifftop castle whose chapel carries around ten thousand hand-painted tiles from the 1500s — a fitting full stop after painting your own. Many days also stop at Setúbal's Mercado do Livramento, a 145-year-old market, and finish at the Cristo Rei viewpoint above the Tagus.
Who this day suits.
Couples and creative travellers, and families with teenagers who want to do something rather than look at something. It is also a strong rainy-day or shoulder-season choice, because the central hour is indoors and the coast still looks dramatic under grey skies.
- Do I need to be able to paint?
- No. The master tile-maker guides the design and the brushwork, and most guests finish with something they are happy to hang.
- Can I take the tile home the same day?
- No — tiles are kiln-fired after you leave. We ship yours to your home address on request, which is included.
- How long is the day?
- Eight to nine hours door to door from your Lisbon accommodation, including the workshop, a winery tasting, lunch and time in Sesimbra.
- Is it suitable for children?
- It works best with teenagers and adults. Younger children can paint, but the wine tasting and the longer stops suit older groups better.
