An Arrábida Wine Day, Hour by Hour
No surprises. This is the shape of the day, from your door and back.
Morning — pickup and the bridge
We collect you from your accommodation, usually between nine and half past. The first twenty minutes are the city and the 25 de Abril Bridge, and then the landscape changes fast: cork oak, pine, and the Arrábida ridge ahead. This is the part of the day to ask questions — what you like, what you would rather skip — because the rest can still flex around it.
Late morning — the first cellar
The first tasting happens before the day gets warm, when palates are fresh. Expect a small working winery rather than a visitor centre: barrels, concrete, someone from the family pouring. Usually four to six wines, moving from white through red to a Moscatel, with time to walk the vines if you want to.
Midday — cheese and bread
Between cellars we stop for Azeitão cheese, bread and whatever else the counter has that day. It is a short stop but it does two useful things: it steadies the tasting, and it puts the food and the wine of the region in the same conversation, which is how people here actually eat.
Early afternoon — lunch by the water
Lunch is in Setúbal or Sesimbra depending on the day, and it runs long on purpose. Fish off the boats, grilled simply, with a local white. Most guests tell us afterwards this was the part they did not expect to remember.
Mid afternoon — the second cellar, or the coast
Here the day splits according to how you feel. Still curious about wine? A second cellar, often a different style entirely. Ready to stop tasting? The Arrábida road over the ridge, with the coves below, and time on a beach instead. Neither costs you anything extra — it is the same day, chosen differently.
Late afternoon — back to Lisbon
We aim to have you back between five and six, before the evening traffic builds on the bridge. If you would rather stay for sunset on the coast and return later, say so in the morning and we build the day the other way round.
- What time does the day start and finish?
- Pickup is usually between nine and nine-thirty, and you are back in Lisbon between five and six. Both ends can move if you prefer.
- How much wine will I be tasting?
- Typically eight to twelve small pours across the day, spread over several hours and around food. Spitting is normal at the cellars and nobody minds.
- Is lunch included?
- On the all-inclusive Arrábida day, yes. On other versions it is shown clearly before you book — we never leave that ambiguous.
- What should I wear?
- Comfortable shoes you can walk gravel and a slope in, and a light layer. Even in summer the ridge and the coast are breezier than the city.
