They handle parking in Sintra, narrow village streets in Alentejo, and the sudden tolls that catch first-time visitors. More importantly, they free you to look out the window. Portugal is a country best seen, not navigated.
The self-drive case — and where it works.
Renting a car makes sense when the route is simple, the pace is slow, and you genuinely enjoy driving. The Algarve coast between Tavira and Lagos, the flat roads of the Alentejo plains, or a single hop to Óbidos are all pleasant behind the wheel. If your plan is one town, a beach, and a relaxed schedule, a rental can be the right tool. The problems start when the day becomes ambitious.

Portuguese drivers are fast on motorways and patient in villages, but the roads change character quickly. GPS will send you down cobblestone lanes built for carts. It will suggest parking that does not exist in August. It will miss the sign for a closed pass in the Serra da Estrela. A local driver reads the road in real time and adjusts without stress.
